Rainy Explorations

This Halloween, my girlfriends and I woke up late, bundled up cute and cozy, and went exploring in a new part of Chicago to us, no real plan on the agenda. It was pretty windy and raining down with no real sign of letting up. However, it only added to the "gloomy, chilly Halloween afternoon" feeling of the day, so I was not complaining, that's for sure.

We went to the absolute cutest little coffee shop ever, Heritage Bicycle Store. Me being the world's official coffee shop connoisseur that I am, of course I had already had it written down on my list of coffee shops to go to. And it certainly did not disappoint.

Train rides on the L are always an experience.

Back on campus, I was reminded of the beauty of a simple fall day. The gradient, ombre effect of the leaves on brick buildings. Nature is just so effortless and magical.

My roommate and I laid low for the rest of the night, snuggling up under our blanket, popping some popcorn, and watching The Polar Express. Hey - there were only a few more hours of Halloween, practically making it the Holiday season already, right?

Goodbye October, you've been lovely. Until next year...

Going Home

Last weekend, I went home for the first time since moving to Chicago. The first time in two months. If my memory serves me right, that's the longest time, consecutively, I've been away from my home and my family.

It was absolutely everything I could have wished for.

My trek from Chicago to Michigan began at Union Station. I was pretty freaking anxious considering I had never gone on the amtrak by myself before, but it was all smooth sailing, my friends! Maybe that's just because I'm a freak and love any and every form of traveling. Or maybe because I got there more than two hours before my actual departure time... hey, a small town girl needs to be prepared for any unexpected big city hindrance.

Absolutely breathtaking architecture in Union Station

Gotta get that Jamba Juice in whilst waiting for the train.

Stunning and peaceful train ride home, watching as the skyscrapers and noise slowly faded into a serene atmosphere, paired with nature and open spaces.

Immediately, the craziest, most prominent thing I noticed when coming home was how the same sky looked completely different in these polar opposite cities. After my mom picked me up and we had our sappy, blubbering, tight squeeze reunion, we were driving home and I was like, oh. stars. right. those are a thing. I actually forgot that stars are what naturally liter the sky, in my mind airplanes had become the new normal object found up above. There is a steady flow of air traffic, every minute, of every day, in Chicago. Now, don't think I'm complaining. The thing is I adore both night skies. Remember I said I love any and every form of traveling, airplanes happening to be my most favorite and admired, they are extremely fascinating and symbolize life always go-go-going, lives never standing still, all around us. At the same time, turning your head up at that same sky and hearing absolutely nothing, seeing absolutely no disturbance of human life, just stars, the moon, outer space that are thousands and thousands of years old, that do stand still and never change no matter where you are in the world, that right there is a sensational feeling you just cannot replace.

I was greeted by the love of my entire life, Addi my niece, with a bowl of whip cream. The girl sure knows how to give a warm welcome if you ask me!

I should tell you, the celebratory happenings of when I came home was The Harry Potter Party October 2015 Extravaganza. My sister will probably kill me if I go into too much detail about what exactly went on at this extravaganza and the level of detail and thought, along with the blood sweat and tears, that went into planning it. Our house was a straight up replica of Hogwarts herself, we made the food from Harry Potter recipe books and ate them all in the Great Hall (good ol' Aunt Petunia's strawberry trifle was a show stopper), we drank butterbeer, the Harry Potter soundtrack was played on a constant repeat all weekend long, and we even played Quidditch. Well, I should say attempted to play Quidditch. It even starting pouring, or as Ron would say, pissing down rain halfway through the game, giving it a genuine Harry Potter game day feel. My sweet, sweet mother even knitted the entire family, plus my best friend Katie, Griffindor scarfs. Now you tell me what shows more dedication than that. Nothing, that's what.

JUST LOOK AT THESE GLORIOUS COUNTRY ROAD FALL TREES.

Baking and Butterbeer by the fireplace. What more could I ask for.

Starting the little one out right. (Spot the floating candles in the Great Hall)

Displayed above, the complete and utter mayhem, confusion and disorganization of our family Quidditch game.

Nothing can sum up the siblings better in one picture than this picture can.

Sunday morning, before church and before I headed back to Chicago, I was in the kitchen with my dad, making breakfast just like we always did.

My nights home consisted of cuddling up with the fam watching Harry Potter, laughing and catching up on life details, while my mornings consisted of early coffee talks with my dad. I thank God every day for giving me a reason to realize how blessed I am to have a family that I can call my best friends. Only a month until I go home again for Thanksgiving, and while I like where I am, Thanksgiving couldn't come fast enough.

Wicker Park

To put it simply, it hasn't really sunk in yet that I live in Chicago now. I live in Chicago. Chicago. See? Still don't believe it. However, whenever me and some friends simply hop on the train and head downtown every weekend or whenever we feel like it, maybe even on a weekday if we're feelin' crazy, realization of reality strikes me in the chest a little bit. I get as close as I'll probably be for a few more months to fully believing this is my life.  Granted, it has only been 3 weeks since making the drastic switch and embarking on my new adventure in the city, so cut me some slack.

The main thing about moving to Chicago that I was ecstatic about was exploring new and diverse districts within the city. And that expectation has certainly not let me down so far. It's absolutely insane to me how around every corner, let alone every district, it seems to be completely polar opposite from the previous one. Not just the architecture or function of the area, but everything.  The people, the culture, the languages, the energy. I can't walk down the street, or around my campus, without hearing a mixture of countless different languages swirling around me. It's almost like every 20 feet you walk in Chicago, you've walked 20 feet into a different country. It's BOMB.

Getting back to exploring different areas of Chicago I have written down on my list... I've checked off a few hidden treasures, Lincoln Park being one of my favorites, along with independent cafe's, restaurants, shops and boutiques. This past weekend, I went to Wicker Park with one of my best friends, Katie (I know, I almost don't believe the irony of my best friend back home and one of my new best friends here both being named Katie). I was successful in checking off many places from my OCD checklist on my phone. We went to Buffalo Exchange, Crossroads Trading Post, Kokorokoko Vintage, and Jeni's Ice Cream, just to name a few. ALL NEW EXPERIENCES FOR ME. Buffalo Exchange treated me well, VERY WELL, scoring a suede skirt and a tan Loft jacket, both for under $20. CAN I GET A HOLLA AT YO GIRL.

We found a cool wall, so we of course had to take photos. Looking at them after, I've realized I match the wall. Even cooler.
What I Wore:
Forever 21 top
Topshop pants
Unknown shoes

Look at this stunner!!!

Aaaaaand look at T H I S stunner!! I mean just wow. I don't know how to fully get it across to you in the way that Jeni's deserves, the magnificent magic that took place in my mouth. Hands down, without a doubt, the greatest ice cream I've had. After stealthily taste testing 6 out of their 12 flavors, I decided on brown butter almond brittle and salty caramel. Just heaven.on.earth.

To even more adventures and discoveries and happiest in the near future! Hear, Hear!

S T R I P E S

My gorgeous soul of a friend, Amy, is one extremely talented photographer. A few weeks ago, she offered to bring her camera around with us and 'oh so candidly' snap photos of me while we simultaneously spent time catching up and exploring the city. I told ya she was a gorgeous soul.

What I Wore:
Ragstock top
Thrifted shorts
Unknown leather jacket
F21 sandals (don't worry, winter is coming so they'll be put on the shelf & you won't have to see them for a while...maybe)
H&M bag
F21 sunglasses
